🪴 How to Grow Your AIE Group

Whether you’re a moderator or a member, it can be daunting to make that first post in an AIE group. But have no fear! Here are some tips on how to start a conversation with your peers on the platform:

1. Use Polls

Polls are easy, interactive, and highly effective at getting responses. For example, Aquaculture Education moderator @ethan polled group members on what kind of resources they were most interested in. Over 20 members voted, with a clear preference for video content!

How to Create a Poll:

  • Start a New Post
  • Click the Poll Icon in the bottom left
  • Select poll options, and click “Done”
  • Click “Post”!

2. Share Pictures and Videos

Posts with visuals consistently receive more likes in AIE groups. Social Dimensions of Aquaculture moderator @emilywhitmore successfully boosted engagement by sharing pictures from her group’s recent session at Aquaculture 2025.

Videos are another great way to earn some extra likes, especially YouTube links. Open Source Data Standards and Analysis moderator Robert McGuinn saw an uptick in reactions after sharing a video presentation on Digital Twins for Aquaculture.

3. Invite Responses and Offer Context

There are easy changes you can make to your post to significantly increase the chances of group members commenting. Let’s look at a recent post in the Hatcheries group that inspired 14 comments:

Here’s what Barley did right:

  • Started off by greeting his audience (“Oyster hatchery folks”)
  • Asked specific question about mag pumps
  • Explained why he was posting (“Reason I ask…”)
  • Concluded by inviting responses (“What gives? Anyone else had this problem?”)

Try it yourself!

Applying these simple guidelines will allow you to start meaningful discussions about aquaculture in your AIE group. Remember, our community is welcoming and friendly—everyone is here to connect and support each other. If you’re not part of an AIE group yet, browse our group directory, join one, and begin meeting other aquaculture professionals and enthusiasts today!
